Background of the Study

Social isolation among the elderly is a significant public health concern, particularly in the context of mental health. Research has shown that social isolation is closely linked to increased risks of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline (Hawkley & Cacioppo, 2023). In Nigeria, where traditional family structures are shifting and rural-urban migration is common, many elderly individuals experience social isolation, which may contribute to the development or worsening of mental health conditions.

Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Akure, Ondo State, is a key facility for the care of elderly patients with mental health disorders. This hospital sees a large number of elderly patients who may experience social isolation as a contributing factor to their mental health struggles. This study aims to explore the relationship between social isolation and mental health disorders in elderly patients at this hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Social isolation is a critical but often overlooked risk factor for mental health disorders in the elderly population. In Akure, the growing trend of elderly people living alone or being socially disconnected may increase their vulnerability to depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. This study seeks to examine the role of social isolation in the mental health of elderly patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between social isolation and mental health disorders in elderly patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure.
  2. To assess the impact of social support on mental health outcomes in elderly patients with social isolation.
  3. To explore strategies for mitigating the effects of social isolation on elderly patients' mental health.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between social isolation and mental health disorders in elderly patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure?
  2. How does social support affect the mental health outcomes of elderly patients experiencing social isolation?
  3. What strategies can help reduce the effects of social isolation on the mental health of elderly patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between social isolation and mental health disorders in elderly patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure.
  2. Social support does not significantly improve the mental health outcomes of elderly patients with social isolation.
  3. Strategies to reduce social isolation do not significantly improve the mental health of elderly patients at the hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on elderly patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Akure, and will examine the relationship between social isolation and mental health disorders. Limitations include the potential for biases in self-reporting levels of social isolation and mental health symptoms, as well as the cross-sectional nature of the study, which limits causal inference.
